You should check out Buster Balloon (formerly known as Don Caldwell) he has some videos on how to make brains out of balloons.

Hey David,

One of my pet peeves is not having the right balloons when I order a balloon DVD.  I really like it when there is a list of balloons that are needed.

I've never been sold on 'em.

I have no problem with other people making money off of me.  If they are going to go out, get a gig, do the leg work, etc then more power to them.  If they get me a gig that I wouldn't have gotten great.

That being said, when I work for an agent, I'm working for the agent---not the person who hired the agent.  I had a negative experience 10 years ago or so.  I worked for the agent and she said that she got paid by the client the day of the event.  So, I would get paid the following week.  Well, the agent claimed that the client stood her up and refused to pay her---thus she didn't have the money to pay me.  It wasn't until I threatened to take her to small claims court that she paid me.

(This is why when I find gigs for my friends that I make it clear that I am not serving as an agent.  I MIGHT take a slightly larger percentage of the pie for finding the event and coordinating it, but I make it clear that we are both working for the client---ideally having the client pay each of us separately.)

Swords... but I try to talk people into things that are atypical.  If everybody asks for the same thing, then the host doesn't feel like they've gotten their money's worth... or at least I feel that the host didn't get their money's worth.  This means that you sometimes have to sell kids on the notion that you can make them something cool... which I usually can.  Once they start to trust that you can make something cool, they realize that they don't know what you can do.

The costume design by David is really cool and simple.  It is something that an advanced beginner could do, and I anticipate making it on a regular basis now that I've seen it.  Very easy to adapt to other heroes.  I fully expect to make my 15 dollar investment back this evening from it!

Note: It doesn't have a helmet... but I think it would be cool if you could get a group of your friends and all wear balloon costumes of the different avengers!
9  General Category / General Discussion / Houston Area Balloon Jam ---Monday June 4, 2012 on: May 04, 2012, 08:53:07 AM
Message flagged Friday, May 4, 2012 10:18 AM The next Houston Area Balloon Jam will be Monday June 4.
Balloon Superstar Michael Crayton will teach a short class from about 6:30-7:30.  The class will be free, but a love offering of ca $5 will be asked for.  Michael is an award winning twister and a phenomenal instructor.

From 7:30-9:30 we will have an open Jam.

The location of the Jam is TBD.  I'm looking for a different venue that is a little more centralized for our friends who live South of Houston.  (Suggestions accepted---I prefer a place that is off one of the major highways.)

The March Jam had about 20 twisters attend, I'm hoping to get it up to 25-30 this time.  Some of the best twisters in the world have been coming to the jam---Michael Crayton, James Anderson, Pat Crosland, Ralph Dewey, and Teri Stokes---the winner of 4 prizes at the 2012 WBC!

Qualatex is sponsoring this Jam---they have donated some door prizes...

Also, if you live/work in the Houston Area, I invite you to join the Houston Area Balloon Artists and More facebook group.  We have about 50 entertainers in the group now.  Mostly balloon twisters and artist (as it started out without the 'and more')... but we've now added a DJ, numerous face painters, clowns, and a caricature artist.  This is an informal group of Houston Area entertainers, so regardless of what your speciality, this is a good place to network.

Adjusted the width to take care of the "Coordinator" issue.

I agree, I just thought it was my website that caused the slideshow to load slowly.  I'll have to look into another platform if others have the same problem.

I also increased the speed at which the slides screened by.  5 seconds was too long, so I made it 3 seconds.  I'm thinking about 2 seconds, but that might be too fast.

Well, I'm in the process of rebuilding my webpage.  (I used to have Microsoft Office Live, but they decided to discontinue that product and offer a new service for 6 times the amount.  So I went elsewhere.)

Anyways, the page is still in development, but I'm getting close to being done with it... possibly.  I'd love some feedback on it.

What do you like?  Don't like? Any suggestions for improvement?  Does it look good on your browser?

(I've renamed my main domain, but kept my old one as a redirect.)

Square users with iPhones: Have you noticed they removed the tip feature? Maybe I overlooked it but at my last gig they wanted to tip me and I said there would be a section for it. The transaction went through and I had to run a second one for the tip. Not a big deal but slightly awkward. I mainly liked it because it was there to put the notion of tipping in their mind. Most people probably don't even think to tip a paid performer.

I believe there is an option for tips, I think you turned it off.  Just like there is an option that automatically calculates taxes.

ALSO i would love a picture or video of how to make a cactus if anyone has one ^_^ Thank yous.

I have a picture, but not on me, but cacti are easy to make.  They look better with 3XX or 6xx balloons, but they can be done with 260s.  (If you don't know what 3xx/6xx are, those are twisting balloons with 3 or 6 inch diameters.)

Blow up the balloon that will serve as the trunk.  Blow up a second balloon.  Don't fill it.  Create a curve in the balloon making a right angle at at the 1/4 mark in that balloon. This will be the arm of the cactus.  At the half way point make two pinch twists.  At the 3/4 mark in the balloon make the other arm.  Take the trunk and about 2/3rds of the way from the bottom, attach it to the pinch twists that you made in the arms.

If you did this with 3xx or 6xx, this looks really nice on a 16" geo or donut balloon base.  If you can put a buzzard on the arm, it goes one step further... flowers area another nice enhancement... as are cow skulls at the base.

I started doing it for my kids and it kind of took off from there.  I'm one of those who never thought I would be doing this for a living, but here I am!

I have yet to meet a person who thought they would be doing this for a living... (Although, now that we are getting into second generation twisting families, they exist---I just haven't met one.)
